My lab focuses on research related to stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, and intergroup relations. Our work draws from social cognitive, motivational, and self-regulation theories. Our research frequently focuses on prejudice reduction strategies. For instance, we investigate how people can learn to control and prevent intergroup biases (especially biases resulting from automatic processes) through self-regulatory processes. We also investigate confrontation as a means of curbing racist and sexist biases by examining factors that influence shorter term effectiveness and longer term bias reduction. Other work in our lab has examined prejudice reduction through self-linking, counterstereotyping, and humanization. Through this research we hope to provide concrete suggestions for how people can become more aware of especially subtle intergroup biases that produce discriminatory outcomes and how various strategies can be used to foster equality.
